Tarrafal (also known as Campo da Morte Lenta, the “Camp of the Slow Death”) was a prison camp in Cape Verde, then a Portuguese colony, set up by the dictator António de Oliveira Salazar after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936), where opponents of his right-wing authoritarian regime were sent. At least 32 anarchists, communists, and other opponents of Salazar’s regime died there.

The camp was closed in 1954 but was re-opened in the 1970s to jail African leaders fighting Portuguese colonialism.

In 2006, the World Monument Fund named Tarrafal one of its 100 watched monuments.

SUMMER PASTURE
a film by Lynn True Nelson Walker
and Tsering Perlo

In recent years, growing pressures from the outside world have posed unprecedented challenges for Tibetan nomads.
Rigid government policies, rangeland degradation, and the allure of modern life
have prompted many nomadic families to leave the pastures for permanent settlement in towns and cities.
According to nomads, the world has entered duegnan — dark times.

Summer Pasture is a feature-length documentary that chronicles one summer
with a young family amidst this period of great uncertainty. Locho, his wife Yama,
and their infant daughter, nicknamed Jiatomah (“pale chubby girl”), spend the summer months
in eastern Tibet’s Zachukha grasslands, an area known as Wu-Zui or “5-Most,”
the highest, coldest, poorest, largest, and most remote county in Sichuan Province, China.

The story of a family at a crossroads, Summer Pasture takes place at a critical time in Locho and Yama’s lives,
as they question their future as nomads. With their pastoral traditions confronting rapid modernization,
Locho and Yama must reconcile the challenges that threaten to drastically reshape their existence.

Premiering Thursday, May 10th, with additional air dates depending upon area.

Some very special video extras of the family will be posted on the PBS blog immediately following the broadcast!

Beginning May 11th, the film will stream for free from the Independent Lens website for 1 week.
Click here to see it on the PBS video page.

The film is available for rent and download on iTunes.

Une vie, une douleur, une victoire (a life, a pain, a victory) was recorded in various studios across Ouagadougou in 2010; and on a shoestring budget. Tracks like “Ce que l’on pense” are a perfect example of Ken and Kiz’s commitment to political insight, as well as their artistic symbiosis.

You will be hard pressed to hear pair of artists who live and breathe hip hop to the extent that these two emcees do. Ken and Ngongull have sacrificed their homes, their lives–everything– for hip hop. Their persistence and desire to remain politically active and outspoken at all costs is synonymous with being devoted emcees. With their latest release Poetes Fyziks are giving new definition to the phrase “and ya don’t stop!”
